Thanks Amy! I found "obesity and hunger" especially interesting, given our location.
On the topic of shopping lists, I checked chicken today at my Brooklyn Key Foods - Perdue ranges from 1.29/lb (thighs) to 1.99/lb (breasts) - that's about $1 per boneless chicken breast. Seems pretty good to me. Other thoughts?

The WIC or Women, Infant and Children program offers coupons for purchase at farmers' markets. Food stamps can also be used at some markets. WIC coupons, distributed as part of the Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) are redeemable only at farmers' markets, and offer pregnant women and mothers of young children $24 per season. The city has 63 farmers' markets, "vital conduits for bringing fresh produce into the kitchens of lower-income households, in large part due to the federal programs: WIC and food stamps"
